Artist Statement
Over the past several years, my exposure to a range of media,
artists and instructors has resulted in the development of
my performance and installation work, with a specific focus
of the intersection of the conceptual and the social in contemporary
sculpture.
A recent project that embodies these interests is my work
with temporarily installed structures of recycled clay and
synthetic materials. As a means to parody the conventions
of fine art connoisseurship and display, I utilize imperfectly
constructed, leaking, plexiglass display cases to contain
the unstable, squalid piles of clay and fur coils.
Alternatively, these constructions have been created in neglected
zones in public buildings, drawing attention to the idiosyncrasies
of institutional architecture via temporary, localized spectacle.
The totality of the process is celebrated as a continuum and
presented as ‘the work’—from conception
to material realization, from social interaction to the structure’s
ultimate decomposition and removal.
